What is an FFP2 / FFP3 face mask?

What are FFP standards?

FFP stands for Filtering Face Pieces. EN 149 is a European standard of testing that defines the performance requirements of FFP masks, which come in three classes (FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3). FFP masks are respirators rather than a “mask”, which also means they fit better, are designed with two-way protection, and must abide by stricter testing and safety ratings than something like a surgical mask.

What is an FFP2 / FFP3 face mask?

An FFP2 or FFP3 face mask is actually a respirator, which has many benefits. One of the key facts about these masks is that they filter at least 94% of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. This means they offer 12 to 16 times greater protection than a surgical mask when fitted correctly.

How does it differ from other ratings?

The main difference in ratings like N95 and KN95 is mostly the region it was rated in. N95 masks are an American standard while KN95 is the Chinese standard, with both considered approximately equivalent to FFP standards in Europe.
